As rainforest is destroyed, animals lose their food supply and the environment in which they live. If the destruction is on a large scale, a species will become extinct. Species which lead very specialized lifestyles, for example depending on only one type of food, are particularly at risk. Scientists estimate that between 20 and 50 rainforest species become extinct every day. For the large mammals and the [L3 708 / birds], poaching is a great danger. The [P 017 / jaguar], Amazonia's largest cat, and the ocelot, a smaller cat, are both hunted for their beautiful skins which are sold to make coats and rugs.
